Does anyone know of a portable device (battery power is a must) that is capable of simply creating an ad hoc network? It doesn’t need to supply an actual Internet connection, so things like Ethernet ports or 3G connections aren’t necessary.
The purpose is simply to connect two devices that are incapable of creating Wifi networks.
My guess would be something along the lines of a cheap, battery=powered router (if those exist). Or better yet, does anyone know how configurable a Mifi is? Can you use it to create a network even if you do NOT have a contract? And can you name the network and set choose security settings? I’m just looking for some good information on them really, Amazon has refurbished MiFis for $30.
Ten points will go to the person who either gives me the cheapest device that (1) fits all requirements (no contract, password-protected) and (2) isn’t a complete piece of crap OR gives me the info I want on the MiFis.
Thanks!

You can use a portable/pocket wifi router with battery backup to connect multiple devices.
Here are some I found on Amazon. Search on multiple sites and you can get a better deal.
Edimax 3G-6210n – 802.11b/g only $84 (link 1)
Zyxel MWR211 – 802.11n supported – $79.94 (link 2) recommended
CradlePoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot – 802.11b/g only $33.65 (link 3)
If you search for ‘wifi router with battery backup’ you can get many more models.
Also let us know the name, model & type of wifi devices you are trying to connect among each other. Maybe the device has an ad hoc system.
