I Just Got Rid Of A Nasty Trojan…. Now I Am Having A Huge Issue Successfully Installing Anything?

By Networking Security Posted in: firewall security

I got rid of a more than hard-to-kill Trojan after a week of trying. Now that its gone any time I try to install anything, from Microsoft Security Essentials, to Windows Updates, to iTunes, I get an error message saying that windows installer doesn’t work. My Firewall is also acting oddly. I’ve done a few hours of looking but have yet to find a solution that works. Here are some examples: Windows Firewall can’t change some of your settings. Error code 0×80070424.
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
This is my home PC, on Windows 7 64 bit premium home edition… Thanks for your help. :]

You haven’t got rid of it or it’s done a lot of damage!
First see if the service is started…
    Click Start
Right-click Computer, and then click Manage.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
In the console tree, click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
In the details pane, right-click Windows Installer, and then click Start.

    Last suggestion…
The System File Checker (SFC) will replace any damaged/missing files on your system.
You might need to get hold of an install disk for your operating system borrow one if possible, (any one will do as long as it’s the same version eg:Home/Pro/Basic/Premium etc.).
Start in SAFE* mode and click Start and type (n the search bar:
    cmd
    and press Return/Enter.
In the command shell box, type
    sfc /scannow
(note the space between sfc and /scannow)
    and press Return/Enter.
If asked to insert the Windows disk, do so.
    When the scan finishes, re-start.
*Note: On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 (be aware that some manufacturers use F8 for system recovery!) then use arrow keys to highlight ‘Safe Mode’ and hit Enter/Return, click on a user account, enter the password (if you don’t know it, there probably isn’t one so leave it blank) and hit enter/return.
