I haven’t worked in a while, as I have been a stay-at-home mom so I’m not sure if things have changed in the workforce lately… I applied for a merchandising job at Convergence Marketing, they did a phone interview, made me an offer and then emailed me a new hire packet to print, fill out, scan and mail back. They also want me to scan my driver’s license and social security card and email it to them. Apparently they email the jobs available in my area and I would then sign up for the ones I want, which would be stocking cosmetic and other products at Walmarts, Walgreens, Targets, Etc… The area manager doesn’t live near here so I would basically be an independent contractor. I’m just not “in the know” in this new age type of job, so if you are – please tell me if this sounds right or like a scam?!? I checked the website for Better Business Bureau – they have an A+ rating and no complaints.

do not ever send copies of those documents, it’s a scam, all they want is your personal info.
No this sounds legitimate since they need this information to keep you hired. I would ask them if you could instead mail them the copies via certified/registered mail so that there’s a record of them receiving it in case anything fishy does happen down the road.
Any job you have has to have documentation for the I-9 form, and they need to make copies of this documentation. They need a document that proves your identity, and a document that proves your work eligibility. For most people that means a drivers license and a social security card. Or, you could send them a copy of a document that proves both, like a US passport.
It’s completely legit. Everyone who has held any job in the last 20 years has had to provide this. You’re just having to do it by email since you’re not in the presence of an HR person.
