I’m Concerned About My First Paycheck, Can You Please Help?

By Networking Security Posted in: security job

You see, I’m not entirely sure if I filled out my W-2 correctly (I had never filled one out before) or I’m just not making enough for them to take the taxes out. I made $310, and social security tax, medicare tax, and CA SUI/SDI tax were taken out for a total of $290 on my paycheck. My parents were looking and noticed that there wasn’t any federal tax taken out. I’m not sure what to do… I don’t want anyone coming after me in the future, haha. I’m going to talk to my employer, but I don’t see her for 2 days, so I wanted as much info I could get before I talked to her.
I can see that at the top it says this:
Exemptions/Allowances:
Federal: 0, Tax Blocked
CA: 0
Again, I don’t know what this means and I don’t know what to do. Are they not taking anything out because the Gross pay is not enough, or something? I’ve heard that before. Or did I just fill out the paperwork wrong? I’m also 20 years old and this is my first job/check. PLEASE help me with any information you have. I REALLY appreciate it!
Thank you!!
(sorry this question is so long)

  1. Quick Answers Says

    It was a W-4, not a W-2.
You put exempt on the W-4. this is “okay” if you make less than $5950 for the entire year of 2012. However, $310 for even bi-weekly would be more than that.
You should have put single/0 or single/1 on each form.
At single/0 on a biweekly check, $22.73 should have been withheld for the IRS.
    At single/1 ” “, $8.12
PS, fix it going forward and don’t fret over the first paycheck not being in the withholding. The IRS doesn’t get upset until you are $1000 short *or* you can’t pay by 4/15.

“tax blocked” sounds like you wrote “exempt” on your W-4. Unless you’re absolutely sure you’ll make under 5800 for the year, you should change that, to single/zero allowances if you’re a dependent, 1 allowance if you aren’t. Change it by filing a new W-4.

No one is gonna come after you so you can breathe a little but I would get this fixed asap because come tax time you might have to pay the government and that stinks cause I had a similar issue last year

  4. Rob Peters Says

You are entitled to a certain number of exemptions based on an assortment of rules. If your legally blind, if youy like icctomom you get more exemption. Exemptions decrease the amount deducted from each check so at the end of the year the amount that’s been withheld is close to the tax you paid in. That way you won’t owe much or get much of a refund.
If you want to increase the amount withheld from each check resulting in a larger yearned refund claim less exemptions than your entitled to. To get the most held out claim 0 ZERO exemptions. There’s a spot on the form where you can put a dollar amount you want taken out extra from each check. You can use this as a kind of forced savings account.
One last thing a small correction to your terminology. You did not fill out a W-2. The W-2 form is complany fills out at the end of the year and gives to you and the IRS.
When you started work you filled out a W-4 form which tells the employer how to classify you and withhold taxes.
