Is Anyone Around That Is Really Good With Computers?

By Networking Security Posted in: internet security

I working on a friends computer. His nternet wroks fine when you click on the IE Logo but when you click on a link from the desktop about every 4/5 click you get a white page with no address and an annoying ding sound. I have performed a couple virus scans by uninstalling and reinstalling AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also scanned for spyware with Spybot, Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware & Advanced Sytem Protector. I checked the startup programs, Task Manager, Internet Settings. Used ccleaner. I can’t think of what this may be. It is quite annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m pretty good with computers but this one is puzzling me. Otherwise the computer works great. It is a Customized 64 bit Gatway Computer with Windows 7.

Well, I’m scratching my head on that too, never heard of anything like that, but there is one tool you have not tried that can rule out malware. TDSSKiller, small executable, no need to install, download link is at the bottom of the page, zip file.http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=20…

This isn’t a direct answer to your query but if you’ve run a number of scans (your list sounds pretty thorough) and they all came up negative, perhaps it is just one of those weird config errors, especially if there are no other symptoms (pc isn’t running slow or other signs of a virus). I would simply suggest using something other than Internet Explorer – there are a number of advantages to using a browser other than IE regardless of this particular problem.

I use to get “about:blank” using Firefox, but I started blocking it with “NoScript”.
Have you right clicked the page and looked into the page “source”?
Also, look into the system “Sound theme” and track down what the ding is related to…it might give a clue.
    iE is junk anyway.
