Is It Illegal To Put A Hidden Camera In A Hotel Room?

By Networking Security Posted in: security camera

I am not talking about the hotel itself doing it because I know that ls illegal. Okay so I have found out that by connecting a webcam to your computer and using simple recording software you can turn that webcam into a basic security camera. If I was to use that same setup in my own hotel room to record what goes on when I am not in there, say the maids cleaning the room, could I get into trouble.

I don’t think you can get in trouble.
You could argue that you paid for the room and its yours for the allotted time.
Its close to the same as renting a apt. You sign something like a lease when you rent the room.
You can have a camera on your valuables to keep an eye on them in a room you paid for, no one can stop you from doing that.

In general, video surveillance is lawful if the purpose is lawful. If I put up cameras to prevent theft or vandalism, that’s okay. If I put up cameras in a bathroom to get footage of naked people for my porno site, that’s not okay. As another example, surveillance for the purpose of obtaining blackmail material isn’t lawful either.
Video surveillance can constitute invasion of privacy in areas where people have a high expectation of privacy like bathrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas.
In some states, the public must be notified that they are subject video surveillance on private property. In most states, that’s not the case.

Yes it is illegal to have a hidden camera in a hotel room if you plan to record someone else in the room, without their knowledge of the camera.

No. You have the right to do whatever you want in the room as long as you don’t damage the room.

  7. Janeline Gilberts Says

Of course not! It is your room and you have the only right to do whatever you want in your own room.

  8. Anonymous Says

It depends on the state and the notification laws. Some states require notification.

  9. Lisa Says

No, it is not illegal to do so if the okay is given.
