John McCain, one of the leading foreign affairs specialists in the Senate and Obama’s Republican opponent in the 2008 White House race, said: “Today marks a harmful and sad setback for the United States in the world. I respectfully disagree with the president: this decision will be viewed as a strategic victory for our enemies in the Middle East, especially the Iranian regime, which has worked relentlessly to ensure a full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.”
Mitt Romney, front-runner in the race to take on Obama in the 2012 White House race, said: “The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government.”
Denis McDonough, the White House deputy national security adviser, speaking to reporters after Obama’s press conference, denied that the withdrawal was a sign of growing Iranian influence.
What do you think?http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/oct…

1. Terrorists vs Sunnis vs Shiite killings
2. Iran waltzing in and taking over
YEP …BAD things are about to happen !
That was political posturing on John McCain’s part.
The ink was dry on this agreement before Obama ever became President. Yet, this jackass stands in front of the cameras and takes credit for it. For What? NOT STOPPING it? because this would happen anyway if he had done nothing, which is just what he HAS done.
It doesn’t really matter, any more. We need to stop being the world’s policeman because we are broke. Bring the troops home and defend our own borders. Face it, the American Empire is over. The Cold War is over. If the rest of the world wants to become Muslim, screw them but it’s not our problem.
DEFEND AMERICA here, protected by the oceans around us.
Our presence there was not going to be indefinite. Iran was always going to have some say in regional affiairs, simply because of its size and position in the area. It’d been in the future for some years now. It could change again, based on events, but hopefully not.
Yes. In one year, we’ll have to go back in there at the request of the Iraqi government to restore order or to defend against an Iranian invasion.
In 5,000 years, has there ever been a real thing called PEACE in the Middle East.
See wikipedia: History of the Middle East, for a short history lesson.
The real setback was going in in the first place — 4,500 Americans dead for nothing.
This was done by GW Bush and obama takes credit for it, he is quick to blame GW but he has never given him any credit.
The big setback for the US (and UK) wasn’t getting out of Iraq, it was going into Iraq in the first place.
Why are you so surprised that Iraq wants to get rid of foreign troops. What would be your view if a foreign army invaded and subdued the USA.
Military power isn’t very affective in the long term. There is much more chance of influencing countries through trade than there is through the use of force.
The US has a history of getting involved in unwinnable wars (eg Vietnam and Afganistan). Where they have won the war. such as in Iraq, they haven’t been able to win the peace.
