Over the weekend I got hit with this rogue anti-virus software called “XP Internet Security 2012″. I’ve seen this thing before under different names, but I’ve NEVER had a headache from it at THIS level. As per its usual routine, it proceeded to embed itself on my system and hijack my internet browsers. No problem, so I ran Malware Bytes and was able to disable it (after having to download the program on my phone and transfer it to the computer). After running this scan (which lasted all of nearly 6 hours), it SEEMED as though most of the problem was removed and I was able to resume my normal activities for the most part, albeit with a significant lag in speed, and random popups.
Fast forward to yesterday, while on a Skype call, I started having internet connection troubles. With our ISP, I run into this issue every so often, so I thought nothing of it at first…that was until my computer froze up completely. So I did a hard restart, and upon rebooting, I noticed that I could no longer access the internet. Not via my browers, not through any IM programs…NOTHING. We reset the routers to see if this would solve the issue, to no avail. Everyone else in the house was and still is able to access the internet, except for me. In the last 24 hours, I’ve run several scans using Malware Bytes, Ad-Aware, and Comodo antivirus. I’ve also ran WinSocks. Still nothing. We’ve tried pinging, renewing and releasing via the ‘ipconfig’ command in DOS, using different IP addresses to connect, and still nothing. And today I have had two failed System Restore attempts. All it says is that it’s “acquiring a network address” or something.
During yesterday’s scans, it found and deleted a file called “afd.sys”, and a later scan turned up something called ‘Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT’ and ‘Win32.Trojan.Agent’. It seems like these were deleted but I’m not sure. Malware Bytes got rid of a ton different issues, however, I still can’t get on the internet. What is going on? This thing has paralyzed my system to where I can’t even access the network to use the PRINTER. Wtf?? This thing is driving me CRAZY! Does anyone have a solution OTHER than formatting the drive? If I must do that, I want that to be the absolute LAST resort… Please help…

The simplest way to deal with this is to restore your computer to an earlier date. Every now and then your computer saves everything and turns it into a type of image or a snapshot. All you have to do is revert to one of these earlier times when your sure you weren’t infected. Simple as that.
go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
Then follow the instructions in that program and select a saved state before your infection started.
Also, after that it would probably be a good idea to get some better anti-virus programs like Colin mentioned above. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (free), Spybot Search and Destroy (free). Also download Malware Bytes (free) and run a scan every now and then just in case Security Essentials missed anything.
have you checked that you got the internet driver? Also you could just use system restore, to restore the computer to the date where it worked.
Get Stopzilla, and get a decent AV, Malware Bytes is a good back up, no more,
I use AVG INternet Security. Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, Anti Spam,Firewall, Link Scanner, Resident Shield, Family Safety, Live Kive, Email Scanner,Update Manager, Online Shield,Anti Rootkit, System Tools, PC Analyser, have to pay extra for this, not much use anyway, Identity Protection.
