I know it is to stop spam, but why is it so hard to read? I have gotten to the point of not trying it a second time when the first doesn’t work. I don’t believe I’m alone on this one, and businesses suffer out of our frustrations.

I feel I share your frustration on this having spent several attempts trying to prove my existence as a human in order to update my avatar here on Yahoo (as you can see, I’m yet to succeed given I still have the default image)!
As you say, the reason for the CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) codes is to prevent spam/automated bots from performing a certain action. Normally they are included on registration forms to ensure the form is being completed by a human rather than a bot.
CAPTCHA’s were initially just codes which were simple to read and enter however bots were adapted allowing them to ‘read’ the CAPTCHA’s and enter a response thus mimicking a human and circumventing the test. This is why they are normally warped or distorted as this makes it a lot harder for bots to automatically determine the text used in them.
I guess what’s important is for a business is to determine whether making CAPTCHA codes mandatory on their website and potentially losing sales for example, outweighs the potential for bots to register ‘fake’ accounts for instance. Also, it’s worth noting that circumventing a CAPTCHA code could potentially breach the Digital Millenium Copyrights Act (DMCA) as reference on Wikipedia.
Captchas are created to prevent bots from recognizing them and getting through and spamming like you said. Different sites use different captcha providers. If it is too difficult, just use the refresh option if there is one. Sometimes there is an audio option that pronounces the captcha for you.
I never seem to have any problem reading them.
