I wanted to lock my wi-fi so others couldn’t use it. I got the ip address and put it in the browser I got to the base management page but when they asked for my password: mine did not fit. What should I have done?

That is the password to log on to your wireless router management page, if you have forgotten the password, you need to reset it and reconfigure it again. you might try following default username and password and see how it goes.
Linksys default username:(leave it blank) password:admin
Dlink default username:admin password:(leave it blank)
Netgear default username:admin password:password
