Wireless Linksys Passwords & Security?

By Networking Security Posted in: Network Security

What exactly is the difference between the wireless wep network and people accessing my linksys router? I have a wpa-psk key setup on the network, but I can still access my linksys router and access it’s setup page by simply typing in admin as the passcode, so what’s the deal here? What’s gonna happen if I setup a pass on the router, will I be prompted for it any other time besides accessing the web based setup?

    There are 2 concepts which you’ve blended, but are actually separate and unrelated:
    The first is the ‘password’ which would be entered to joint the WLAN, and access the resources available on that WLAN (such as Internet). Sometimes referred to as the “pre-shared key” (PSK).
    The second concept is the Administration of the router itself: it is a username and password used by the person in control of the WLAN, to make changes to the settings of the router.
    This of course should not be the same as the above PSK, and kept under tight security controls.
    The default Administration username & password are easy to obtain from several sources, so they must be altered in order to thwart hacks. (in your case, it appears to be “admin”)
    Along with mod’s to those, these other 3 things must be done:
    1) Re-name the network (it’s SSID)
    2) Turn off the SSID. This is the router broadcasting it’s presence, and what name it has. Not overly important PROVIDED you have altered the default settings for the router;
    3) Turn off “WAN access to the Administration”. This prevents someone from getting into the router itself (Admin) from a remote location.
    Make sure to ‘save’ these changes (or ‘make default’) after having written them down.
    Keep it in a unit handbook for your eyes only.
    Did that help?

    You set a password to keep other people from getting on the internet from your router.
    You will only be prompted for the password once, then you can have your computer remember it.
